About this game

The word BLUE in red ink. Ink or word? A 30-second brain tangle

What this game is

The word BLUE shows up in red ink. What do you answer? If the tag says INK, pick red, the colour it is painted in. If it says WORD, pick blue, the colour it spells.

Reading is so automatic that the word jumps in before the colour does. Psychologists call it the Stroop effect, and this game asks you to fight it for 30 seconds.

How to play

The first six are all INK
The opening questions only ask for the ink colour, so you can warm up. After six correct answers the rule starts switching to WORD now and then.
Check the tag first
When the rule flips, the tag turns from green to orange and gives a shake. Glancing at the tag before the word is the habit that lifts your score.
Sometimes they match
About one question in five uses matching word and ink. Always tapping the opposite will not save you.

Frequently asked questions

How is the score worked out?
Your score is how many you answer correctly in 30 seconds. A wrong answer takes 2 seconds off the clock.
Is it the same in every language?
The rules are the same and only the colour names change. The more native the language, the faster the word reads and the harder it gets.
What if I have trouble telling colours apart?
It uses red, blue, green and yellow, so red-green colour blindness can make it tough. There is no WORD-only mode yet.
