About this game

Eat apples to grow, avoid the walls and your own tail

What this game is

The classic snake: every apple you eat adds one segment to your body. The board is thirty squares across, and touching a wall or your own tail ends the run.

The first minute is roomy. After that your own tail becomes the wall and the space you can turn in keeps shrinking, which is why good runs hug the edges and leave the middle open. Your best score stays in this browser, so the score to beat is yesterday's you.

How to play

Four directions, nothing else
On a desktop it is the arrow keys, on a phone the four buttons under the board or a swipe across the board itself. You cannot turn straight back into yourself.
The speed never changes
The snake moves one square every tenth of a second and never speeds up. What makes it hard is your own length, nothing else.
Keep the middle open
Apples appear anywhere on the board. Coil along the edges and there is always a lane left into wherever the next one shows up.
Best score and challenge links
Your best is kept in this browser. When a run ends you can share a link carrying that score, and whoever opens it starts with your number posted as the mark to beat.

Frequently asked questions

Does it speed up as you go?
No. The pace is the same from start to finish, and the difficulty comes from your growing body rather than from speed.
How do I steer on a phone?
Use the four buttons under the board, or swipe across the board in the direction you want. Both work.
Where is my best score kept?
Only in this browser. Open the game on another device or in a private window and it starts from zero again.
Is there anything to install or sign up for?
Neither. It is free, and one Google sign-in gets you playing on a phone or a desktop right away.
